Volunteer Services- Regents Tutor Program

For many years the University of Nevada and the WCSD have had a strong partnership serving the students of the Reno/Sparks community through various programs. One such program is the Regents Service Program, that was established to provide University students with paid service/work opportunities that contribute to critical needs of the Reno/Sparks community with priority focusing on literacy programs specific to K-12. The program serves high needs schools within a five-mile radius of the University and student mentors/tutors must meet academic criteria to be a part the program. This year the Regents Service Program hired 16 mentor/tutors that served 485 students from ten different schools. Regents mentors/tutors usually work 15-20 hours a week assisting classroom teachers, facilitating group work, and work with students in various after school programs. The program is a great way for Education and related majors to have fun, gain classroom experience, improve literacy, and positively impact the lives of students while pursuing a degree at UNR. If you or some you know is interested in being a Regents mentor/tutor for the 2016-2017 school year, please contact Derek Hughes at 786-4601 or dhughes@washoeschools.net
